How Does Solar Power Work?

The most common solar power system installed in New Zealand is a grid connected system. How does it work?

Simply speaking the sun shines on the solar panels mounted to your roof and this high voltage DC power runs through cable to an inverter mounted on your wall or in your garage. This inverter converts the DC power from the panels to useable AC power, distributed by your switchboard. Excess energy is sold back to the grid and you can receive a credit for this from your retailer.
